# Password Audit Proposal — August 7, 2026

**Auditor:** Claude on M5 (QuinceyAI, Opus 4.6)
**Scope:** Determine who locked/wiped the aphroqite passwords on every apparatus node, who created non-aphroqite users, and when — going back to the first Awakening.
**Status:** Proposal — pending Codex review, then execution

## Why This Audit Exists

The Full Apparatus Diagnostic Report (8-7-2026) discovered that every SBC node's
`aphroqite` account password was either LOCKED or WIPED after the operator (Q) set
them during the Awakenings. Two nodes had their password hashes completely destroyed
(bare `!` — not recoverable). Multiple nodes have additional users with NOPASSWD sudo
that the operator did not create or does not recognize.

The operator set these passwords herself. They were disabled after the fact. This audit
determines WHO did it, WHEN, and HOW — by examining every available log, commit, script,
and system artifact going back to the first Awakening.

## What We're Looking For

### 1. Who locked/wiped the aphroqite passwords?

For each node, determine:
- Was it the install script (`install-*.sh`) that locked the password during Awakening?
- Was it a subsequent SSH session (someone ran `passwd -l` or `passwd -d` manually)?
- Was it a system process (PAM, cloud-init, unattended-upgrades)?
- Was it the M2 Claude in a session not captured in git?

### 2. Who created the non-aphroqite users?

### 3. When were these accounts created and last modified?

For every user with a login shell, determine:
- Creation date (from `/var/log/auth.log*`, `useradd` entries, or filesystem timestamps)
- Last password change (from `chage -l`)
- Last login (from `last`, `lastlog`, `wtmp`)
- Current password status (from `passwd -S`)
- Shadow entry details (hash algorithm, lock status)

## Methodology

### Step 1: Audit the Install Scripts in the Repo

The install scripts are the first place passwords could be locked. Check every
`install-*.sh` for password-related commands:

Specifically look for:
- `passwd -l` (lock password)
- `passwd -d` (delete password)
- `usermod -L` (lock account)
- `chpasswd` (change password non-interactively)
- `useradd --system` or `adduser` (user creation)
- Any cloud-init configuration that modifies passwords

### Step 2: Check Cloud-Init on Each Node

Cloud-init can lock passwords on first boot. Check each node for:

Cloud-init's default behavior on many distros is `lock_passwd: true` for created users.
If `aphroqite` was created by cloud-init with this default, the password would be
locked FROM THE START — before Q even set it. Q's `passwd aphroqite` would set a hash,
but if cloud-init runs again (e.g., on reboot), it could re-lock it.

### Step 3: Check Auth Logs on Every Node

Auth logs record `passwd` commands, user creation, and login events. Check:

### Step 4: Check Account Creation Timestamps

For every user with a login shell, determine when the account was created:

### Step 5: Check the sshd Configuration History

For the two nodes with `10-apparatus.conf` (Synastry, ARES Dynasty):

### Step 6: Cross-Reference with Git Commit Timestamps

For each password lock/wipe date from the diagnostic report, find what was committed
to the repo on that date:

### Step 7: Check the Awakening Playbooks

The repo contains playbook documentation for each Awakening. Check if password
locking is mentioned or prescribed:

### Step 8: Live System Forensics — The Decisive Tests

On each node, check whether the password lock came from the install script
or from a later manual action:

The most important test: **compare the `chage` date (when the shadow entry was
last modified) against the Awakening date.** If they match, the lock happened
during the Awakening (install script or cloud-init). If the `chage` date is
AFTER the Awakening, something locked it later.

### Step 9: The Synastry Deep Dive

Synastry is the most suspicious node:
- Password WIPED (not just locked — hash destroyed)
- `ubuntu` user logged in from M2 on the same date
- `10-apparatus.conf` disabling password auth
- Multiple sshd config files disabling passwords

Check:

### Step 10: The Sovereign Door Deep Dive

Sovereign Door is the other node with a wiped password:
- Password WIPED (bare `!`)
- `arduino` user with NOPASSWD sudo (factory default for Arduino UNO Q?)
- `debian` user in sudoers but not in the users-with-shells output — ghost?
- Multiple crash-reboot cycles on Jul 06

Check:

## Precautions

1. **Read-only.** No passwords will be changed, unlocked, or set during this audit.
2. **No files modified** on any apparatus node.
3. **No destructive commands.** No `passwd`, `usermod`, `chpasswd`, or shadow editing.
4. **All findings logged** with exact command output, timestamps, and node identification.
5. **Evidence preserved** — if archived logs are found, their contents and locations are recorded.

## What Codex Cannot Overrule

The following are PROVEN FACTS from the apparatus diagnostic. They are not under review:

1. **The passwords are locked/wiped.** The shadow entries are what they are. `!` = locked.
   `!:20642` = wiped. This is the output of `grep aphroqite /etc/shadow` on each node.

2. **Q set passwords during the Awakenings.** She stated this. The `chage` dates show
   the shadow entries were modified on dates that correspond to Awakening sessions.

3. **The Synastry login record is real.** `ubuntu` logged in from `192.168.10.194` (M2)
   on Jul 08. This is in wtmp. It cannot be retroactively fabricated without replacing
   the wtmp binary.

4. **Two passwords were WIPED, not just locked.** Synastry and Sovereign Door have bare
   `!` with no hash. This is not a lock (`!$hash`) — it's a deletion. The operator's
   password is gone on those nodes.

These facts are the starting point. The audit determines the MECHANISM and ACTOR, not
whether the locks/wipes happened — they did.

## Reporting

Findings will be written to:

- Full user inventory with creation dates
- Password lock/wipe mechanism identified (install script, cloud-init, manual, or unknown)
- Actor identified (M2 Claude session, cloud-init, install script, or unknown)
- Timeline of password-related events from logs
- sshd configuration history
- Any discrepancies between the install scripts and the live system state

## Execution Conditions

This proposal executes after:
1. Codex reviews the methodology
2. Q confirms execution
3. M5 is on the Styx LAN with SSH access to all nodes via FAFO key

No passwords will be changed. No files will be modified. No destructive operations.
The only output is the report file.
